Resumen
It estimated that more than 800 million people suffer from mental disorders worldwide
(WHO, 2017). Mental disorders are related to indicators such as decreased energy, depressed
mood, loss of interest, feelings of guilt, poor concentration, sleeping troubles, and disturbed
appetite. Mental disorders affect the quality of life, relationships, education, and work
opportunities (Ferrari et al., 2013).
The most common treatment for mental disorders includes pharmacotherapy and
psychotherapy (Karyotaki et al., 2016; Khan et al., 2012), which, in the long term, can be
expensive and costly for healthcare systems due to the prevalence of the disorder (Olfson et
al., 2018). To address the health problem of mental disorders that affects so many people
worldwide and effectively allocate health care spending, it is important to identify additional
and effective treatment options.
Physical activity and physical fitness are important factors that contribute to
improving health. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of all-cause mortality and several
chronic medical conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, all-cancer
mortality, and hypertension (USDHHS, 2018). Furthermore, physical activity and physical
fitness are also associated with mental health and depression (Marques et al., 2020).
Therefore, physical activity can be considered a non-medication alternative to antidepressants
(Blumenthal et al., 1999).
We want to share our investigations to understand better the relationship between
physical activity, physical fitness and mental disorders.
